Truth be told, I was already toying with the idea of signing up for the Color Run™ 5k when the folks at KIND Snacks invited me to be one of their #KINDawesome correspondents. Having never run a 5k before, I was excited to see if I was up to the challenge. I mean, I’ll be the first to admit that cardio workouts (running included) just plain suck. That said, I consider myself physically fit…for the most part. Also, I figured if I was going to attempt a 5k, one with the tagline “the Happiest 5k on the Planet” might be a good place to start.
I really didn’t know what to expect from the race, but as soon as we got a few blocks from the starting point I could hear the music blasting and the people cheering. Thousands of people dressed in tutus, brightly colored wigs, Color Run gear and a whole lot of white were gathered together waiting for each waves of the race to start. It was basically a giant party, and it was awesome!
The run itself flew by. I swear it was over in the blink of an eye. The 3.1-mile course was broken up by four color stations where volunteers doused runners with food-grade cornstarch in yellow, orange, blue and pink. At each color station, music was pumping, people were cheering and some neighborhood dwellers were offering free hugs to runners. Heck, even the cops along the course were giving hugs and high-fives—finding themselves coated in color right along with the rest of us.
At the end of the course, various vendors passed out tasty treats, cold water and other goodies. A man donning a unicorn head led a large conga line as music pumped up the crowd. Meanwhile, volunteers were throwing packs of colored cornstarch into the crowd. Finally, as the emcee counted down to zero and the music amped up, the crowd went wild, throwing their color packets into the air. It. Was. Awesome.
Risking the life of my iPhone, I snapped photos along the course because I’m photo obsessed. Believe me when I say, if you have yet to participate in the Color Run™ 5k, you are seriously missing out on a good time. Seriously.
Special thanks to KIND Snacks for sponsoring me and to my awesome friend Lindsay for coming along on this adventure with me!
