DIY Animal Place Card Holders

I somehow ended up with a subscription to some magazine called Do It Yourself, which I’m pretty sure I never actually signed up for. At any rate, if they want to send me a free magazine, I’ll gladly take it…especially if it’s filled with DIY ideas and inspiration! This month’s issue featured a piece on turning plastic animals into place card holders for a dinner party. I thought it was pretty cute, so I decided to try it out for myself. If you want to give it a go, here’s how to go about it…

What you’ll need:
– Plastic animals (I bought mine at a local craft store)
– Vice
– Hacksaw
– Spray paint (I went with gold)
– Mini neodymium disc magnets
– Hot glue gun & glue
– Cardstock & pen

Let’s get started…
The first thing you need to do is put those cute little animals in the vice and tighten them down so they don’t shift while you hack them in two. My solid plastic animals were no match for the hacksaw and after about 5 minutes of sawing on each, I had all my animal halves ready to go.

3 5b 5 4 Next, put down some newspaper and grab your spray paint, it’s time to paint your animal halves! I had to apply a couple coats to get into all the crevices and cover the original colors.

6 8 Once the spray paint dries, grab your magnets and a glue gun and get to adhering the magnets. Make sure you apply the magnets so your halves will attract and not repel!

9 Once the glue has fully dried, you can put your animals back together. A couple of my magnets pulled one side free from the glue, so don’t be surprised if you have to re-glue one or two magnets.

10 Add your customized place cards and you’re ready to set the table!
