Sofia Lacin loves color. Her adoration of all things vibrant is evident in everything that surrounds her. From her home to her clothes to the abstract paintings she creates, the 6-foot-tall beauty embraces the bold and the brilliant. As someone who tends to shy away from color, I was surprised to find myself inspired by Sofia’s use and control of it. Her home was warm and inviting, her wardrobe choices original and creative—and all of it a reflection of who she is, a down-to-earth beauty who dares to be herself.
The daughter of a professional photographer and one smashingly stylish mother, Sofia is no stranger to art and fashion. So, it isn’t surprising that this local It Girl is using her DNA to the fullest. When not working on her own portraits and abstract paintings, Sofia lends her creative talents to Lacin Christophel Mural & Design, a business she shares with her roommate and creative partner Hennessy Christophel (who actually contacted me to recommend Sofia for this feature).
Sofia absolutely loves her job. In fact, when I asked her what her dream job would be she simply replied, “The job that I have now—only with a lot more influence and reach and financial stability.”
Sofia and Hennessy’s collaborative murals can be seen in numerous local restaurants and businesses, including Cuffs, Shady Lady, Top This and East Sac Hardware. For a look at her wardrobe and home, simply read on…

Kickin' back: Sofia is totally at ease in front of the camera...largely because her father is a professional photographer.
Describe your personal style.
I’m first and foremost attracted to color. I love clothes that are simple and classic in their design with an exciting and unique twist.
Who are your favorite designers?
Sass and Bide, Chanel (I love this collection), Caren Template, Ethan & Co. It’s hard to pick a few—there are so many amazing designers out there whom I really admire.

Leather lust: This leather bag was a hand-me-down from Sofia's mother, who bought it while she was in college.
If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?
Bowie (when he was about 25), Empire of the Sun’s headdress section of their closets, Carrie Bradshaw from years ago—that is still awesome stuff.
Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I look at Lost at E Minor all the time—more of an all around inspiration giver. I’m inspired by the possibilities when it comes to decorating your body. Just people watching is inspiring to me.
Is there an item you’re currently eyeing?
These absolutely gorgeous loafers from J. Crew—they are sparkly like the holidays. I know “gorgeous” and “loafers” seem like a contradiction, but just check them out.
What was your most recent purchase?
A cream cape frock from the ’60s—got it at Fringe.
What is your favorite item in your closet?
My mom’s old KCRA 3 healed boots. She used to wear them for the weather reports. I can’t live with out them during the cooler months. There’s something completely magical about a mom’s gorgeous hand-me-down that cannot be beaten!
How often do you purge items from your closet?
Often. I like to feel like when I step into my closet I am far from bored. I hate feeling turned off by my own stuff.
Is there a current trend you can’t stand on men?
I can’t stand some men’s continual resistance to the fitted pant—what’s the deal?
What trends do you expect to see this fall?
Lots of tailored men’s wear inspired pieces—just the way I like it. Makes a woman look so together and in charge—that’s sexy. But I don’t really know enough about the fashion industry to be making claims and predictions. I predict warmer clothes.
What are a few of your favorite styling products?
Straight up virgin coconut oil. Be careful with it though—you can end up with a greasy cat, and steering wheel, etc…use in moderation. Also, Moroccan and Argan oil for the hairs—especially if its curly and you like to fluff it up a lot via the back comb method. I love “big” Sexy Hair products, too.
Have any favorite shopping spots you care to divulge?
Cuffs, Bows and Arrows, Deseret Industries, French Cuff Consignment, Zara, garage sales.
Unrelated to fashion, but because I am interested…what’s on your iPod?
Bonobo, Beruit, Mac Dre, Malcolm Kipe, Erik Satie, Cut Copy, Miles Davis, Kimbra….
