Laura O’Brien is a total babe. No doubt about it. On top of being a natural beauty, she also happens to be smart, stylish and down-to-earth. Basically, an all around doll. She’s the kind of girl every guy wishes he could date and every girl wishes she could be…or at least be friends with so you could raid her wardrobe!
Currently working as a social media specialist at Sacramento Magazine, and as a styling assistant and social media coordinator for Sister | Brother Style and Style Army (both founded by former CC-er Mary Gonsalves-Kinney), Laura is one busy lady—always keeping a finger on the pulse of the fashion industry. Oh, and the 5’7″ beauty also does a little modeling on the side, which is not surprising given that she’s a total babe—as I’ve already pointed out.
“Honestly, I’d love to make it big in the modeling industry, but I’d also be happy as a professional stylist or styling editor for a major magazine,” remarked Laura.
Wherever life takes her, I’m certain this oh-so-stylish lady has a bright future ahead of her, especially given her intelligence, drive and passion for all things fashion.
Ok, enough chatter, here’s a look at the bewitching Laura O’Brien and her edgy fashion sense…
How would you describe your style?
Pretty simple, with a bit of an edge. I find myself buying a lot of basics and then I just try to pair them in interesting ways. Then I love to edge up my whole look with funky shoes and jewelry that’s a bit more rock and roll.
Who are your favorite designers?
Hands down, right now Isabel Marant. I also love Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Acne and Wildfox.
If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?
Probably the Olsen twins, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them wearing an outfit that I didn’t like. Or Kate Bosworth, something about her style is so effortless and put together.
Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I’m an avid magazine reader—InStyle and Nylon are a couple of my favorites. I also spend a large amount of my time on the computer so all my bookmarked pages are style blogs. I regularly follow “Style by Kling,” “Fashiontoast,” “Bleach Black,” and “Sister Brother Style” (Duh! Haha).
Is there an item you’re currently eyeing?
I really want a new handbag, but that is a huge investment piece for me. Somehow I can find a way to justify spending a pretty penny on one because I will literally use it everyday and then someday I can pass it on to my daughter. I’m hoping to save up for either an Alexander Wang bag or a Phillip Lim “Pashli” satchel. I haven’t made up my mind yet!
What was your most recent wardrobe purchase?
A few weeks ago I bought a Wildfox turtleneck even though it was close to 100 degrees outside. It seemed like a good idea at the time!
What is one item in your closet you can’t live without?
My black faux-leather jacket. I’ve had it for a few years now so it’s nice and worn in and it goes with everything. I would be pretty sad if I ever lost it.
What’s in your closet that you’ve never worn?
I have so many things hanging in my closet with tags still on or that I just haven’t worn yet. I’m totally guilty of being a clothes collector. If I fall in love with something, I will hold on to it until the right event comes around or until I can work it into the perfect outfit.
How often do you purge items from your closet, and where do your castaways go?
Not often enough. I usually get around to it once or twice a year, but hopefully now that I moved into a tiny studio, I will get around to it more frequently.
Style-wise, is there a current trend you can’t stand on men? On women?
It’s not so much a trend, but I feel like men are so casual these days! I’m not saying they need to be in a suit all the time, but have some fun when you go out on the weekend and leave the T-shirts and sneakers at home every once in a while.
For women, I’m bored of the high-waisted denim shorts. Yes, I think they can be cute and yes I’ve made a pair myself, but now everyone’s wearing them and they seem too uniform.
What are your favorite styling products?
I love the new BB creams that are out. They give a nice glow without having to wear a bunch of makeup. It’s perfect for those mornings when I’m rushed to get out of the door.
I’m also a fan of Your Highness by TIGI. I have really fine hair so I love the added volume it gives.
Have any shopping spots you’re willing to divulge?
Locally I love Cuffs, Madam Butterfly, Heart Boutique and Good Stock. Online my favorites are Zara, Asos, Topshop and Nastygal—just be prepared to get some strange looks from the mailman when they deliver those packages. Haha.
What are your top five haunts?
I love Harlow’s for live music, Mulvaney’s for enjoying a drink at the bar with my family, the Capitol or McKinley Park for running the track and people watching, Bandera for an amazing meal (try the Thai Steak Noodle Salad!), and Riverpark because that’s where I grew up.
Unrelated to fashion, but because I am interested…what’s on your iPod?
Lately I’ve been listening to the new No Doubt, Bon Iver, TM Juke and Lana Del Rey.
