Closet Case :: Ashlee Nichole

Under the “about” section of Ashlee Nichole‘s Facebook page, you’ll find six terms that the twenty-year-old local It girl identifies with: Lolita, metal, rock ‘n’ roll, wild child, spooky and mermaid. After meeting the the porcelain-skinned beauty with the fire-red hair, those six words/phrases make perfect sense. Standing at a mere 5′ 3.5″ (I like how she counts half inches), Ashlee embodies a unique blend grit, verve, sexuality, innocence and femininity. Her piercing blue eyes simultaneously lure you in and challenge you, as if she’s drawing you in for the kill.

Currently a freelance model, Ashlee is no stranger to being in front of the lens and has posed for a number of local and notable photographers. She also moonlights as a freelance make-up artist for MAC Cosmetics, lending her skills to many of the shoots she does. While Ashlee loves modeling, she also has aspirations to become a special-effects make-up artist for movies and television. Oh, and her dream job would be to be a princess at Disneyland. Although, while the Walt Disney Co. might be okay with her tattoo that reads “I wish I was a mermaid,” I’m willing to bet they won’t let her “Lolita” tattoo slide.

At any rate, here are some shots from my shoot with Ashlee. Enjoy!

How would you describe your style?
This is hard to answer because I feel like I’m constantly changing. One day I’m Dolores Haze and the next I’m Wednesday Addams—although, most days I’m a combination of both. I’m very inspired by ’90s grunge and ’70s punk. I prefer over sized. I wear way too much black. I’m a sucker for anything with a ridiculous print. I pair just about everything with a leather jacket and creepers.

Who are your favorite designers?
Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood, and Jeremy Scott.

If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?
Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder’s character in “Beetlejuice”). She is a huge style icon to me. If we’re talking about nonfictional people I would love to steal pieces from Lana Del Rey, Rachel Bilson, Kourtney Kardashian, and Chloe Sevigny.

Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I have an inspiration folder saved to my computer so when I find random pictures on the Internet that inspire me I put them in there for future reference. Or I’ll tear out pages from magazines and tape them up next to my mirror. I also watch some of my favorite movies (“Beetlejuice,” “Lolita”). I can find inspiration just about anywhere.

Is there an item you’re currently eyeing?
UNIF ‘Hellbound’ shoes, a neon yellow satchel from the Cambridge Satchel Company, and a dress by Lazy Oaf. I could go on…

What was your most recent wardrobe purchase?
A UNIF tank top.

What is one item in your closet you can’t live without?
A pair of tights and my creepers. I can never pick just one.

What’s in your closet that you’ve never worn?
The better question might be what’s in my closet that I have worn? I have an abundance of pieces from various thrift stores I’ve purchased but have yet to wear. I’m always finding something with the tags still attached. The one thing that I never wear that bums me out is a Jeremy Scott tank top from his Spring/Summer 2010 collection. I can never decide what to pair it with.

How often do you purge items from your closet?
Almost never. I hoard clothing. Everyone once in a while I’ll give some away to a friend or sell a piece, but it’s very rare.

Style-wise, is there a current trend you can’t stand on men? On women?
My least favorite trend is basic. It is so boring seeing girls who all wear the same cookie cutter Forever 21 outfits. For boys, I’m really over the whole stretched ears and tattoos look. It’s not appealing to me.

What are your favorite styling products?
‘Snob’ lipstick and ‘Teddy’ eye kohl liner by MAC are my daily must haves. I have this hair defrizz serum from Kerastase, but the bottle is in French so I have no idea what it actually does or what it’s called—it just works wonders. Dr. Bronners peppermint soap is my number one solution for breakouts, plus it makes your skin feel and smell amazing.

Have any shopping spots you’re willing to divulge?
The one place no one seems to know about is the American Apparel outlet in Napa. It’s a drive but you do save a significant amount. Other than that I hit up Goodwill, Thrift Town, and Ecothrift in Sacramento quite a bit.

Unrelated to fashion, but because I am interested…what’s on your iPod?
Lana Del Rey is the soundtrack to my life right now. I’m absolutely obsessed. Also Eisley, Marina and the Diamonds, Sky Ferreria, Stars, Lights, Le Tigre, the Runaways, Matt and Kim, the Kills, Mazzy Star.
