Some girls have it all—beauty, grace, wit, charm, smarts. Vanessa Labi is one such girl. The 26-year-old beauty has dark, expressive eyes, voluminous tresses worthy of a shampoo commercial and a heart of pure gold. She’s also a natural in front of the camera, not afraid to try a variety of poses, integrate props or embrace a certain amount of adorkableness (much like her fashion muse Alexa Chung), which always makes for a fun shoot.
Currently a social media apprentice at Agency M (a subdivision of Sacramento Press), Vanessa dreams of becoming an editor for a fashion or lifestyle magazine—a la Nylon. Of course, her aspirations don’t stop there, she also longs to be a best-selling author of creative non-fiction. Given her passion, talents and gumption, there’s no doubt Vanessa will accomplish whatever she puts her mind to….and you can bet she’ll look good while she does!
At any rate, here are a couple of pictures from our shoot. Vanessa’s equally adorable sister Michelle was a great help, supplying props and even jumping into a few shots.
How would you describe your style?
Concert-ready, free-spirited, edgy coupled with a feminine sensibility, with eclectic touches.
Who are your favorite fashion designers?
Mara Hoffman, Isabel Marant, and Giuseppe Zanotti. More realistically for my budget, Madewell and Jeffrey Campbell.
If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?
Alexa Chung for her edgy adorkableness and Diane Kruger because she’s a petite bombshell and the fashion risks she takes always pay off.
What was your most recent wardrobe purchase?
The high-heeled oxford peep-toes I wore with the leather shorts are a recent purchase from the wonderful sensory-overload that is the Brooklyn Flea Market.
What is one item in your closet you can’t live without?
My beat-up boots that have molded to my feet and look like they belong in the early 20th century.
What’s in your closet that you’ve never worn?
These boot-cut Seven jeans that are a little outdated. They’re really nice, but they don’t really fit my style so they live at the bottom of my drawer.
How often do you purge items from your closet, and where do the castaways go?
Um, hardly ever. I’m the girl who takes things to sell at Crossroads only to have a last-second change of heart at the counter so I end up keeping half the stuff I take in! I need to learn to let go!
What are your favorite styling products?
I love Nars for eye shadow and nail polish and Tarte for their Amazon Clay foundation. For hair, I use mostly Bumble and Bumble, but a quick swipe of Moroccan Oil when I’m feeling lazy usually does the trick. For skin, I love Fresh’s soy products, but they’re pricey, so I usually mix it up with drugstore brands like Neutrogena and Avalon Organics.
Have any shopping spots you’re willing to divulge?
A lot of my stuff is from LF from when I lived in Los Angeles. It’s very trendy and fun, but ridiculously over-priced so I’m not afraid to admit that I was strictly a sale shopper. They would have this amazing 60% off sale twice a year, and since they’re all over LA, I would hit up at two or three of their stores during sale time. Now that I’m living back in Sac, I’m all about Cuffs. I really like how they curate their store. I also love online shopping — NastyGal, Zara, and Madewell are my faves!
Give me your 5 favorite local haunts.
I love cocktails so I love going to Hook & Ladder, Red Rabbit, and Shady Lady, and Old Ironsides for a more dance-y vibe. I like eating at Magpie and Blackbird, and as an ice cream connoisseur (aka recovering addict), I love Vic’s in Land Park.
What music would I find on your iPod?
Little Dragon, Cut Copy, Toro y Moi, Janelle Monae, Jack White, Nite Jewel, Dam Funk, and a whole lot of soul and funk. I looove to dance!
