Whenever I think of stylish twins, my mind goes straight to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. At least, it did until I met Rachel and Rebekah Nesom. These local beauties are certainly giving the Olsens a run for the money in the fashionable twin sisters department. Plus, at 6-feet tall, they’ve got the “Full House” twins beat by a good 10 to 12 inches, depending on your height source for the diminutive Olsen twins.
In addition to sharing their style savviness, the Nesom twins also share the same house, friends, major (both are studying accounting at Sac State) and an affinity for the visual arts. They even admit that they do almost everything together. Basically, the 22-year-old natural beauties have been inseparable since birth. That said, despite all the commonalities, the girls admit that their personal styles tend to differ slightly.
“We share a very similar aesthetic,” remarked Rebekah. “Although, Rachel tends to be more of a risk taker, she will always try out a new trend first. I’m also much more of a pants girl, whereas Rachel always wears dresses and skirts.”
“I think style-wise, I like to dress a little more feminine whereas [Rebekah] dresses a little more tailored,” added Rachel.
Now for a look at the fashionable Nesom twins…
Describe your personal style.
Rachel: I’d say I’m a little hippie, a little funky. Easiness and comfort is important to me. In the spring and summer I wear dresses and skirts more often than not, I hate pants!
Rebekah: Casual & easy, but still feminine. I think like anyone, I wear what makes me feel comfortable and confident.
Who are your favorite designers?
Rachel: I like Rachel Roy, Tory Burch, Jill Stuart, just anything that is easy, wearable and feminine.
Rebekah: Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, and I love Rachel Roy’s line at Macy’s.
If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?
Rachel: Lately I’ve been loving everything that I see Olivia Munn and Eva Mendes wearing.
Rebekah: I’m guilty of watching too much of the Kardashians, but I really love Kourtney’s style. And if she weren’t half my size, I would totally steal everything from her wardrobe.
Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
Rachel: I don’t read many magazines really, or follow any specific fashion blogs religiously. I think I just follow the trends I like and that flatter me. Mostly I think its just other peoples street style that gives me ideas.
Rebekah: Friends, style blogs, Pinterest. I don’t read too many magazines, so I usually rely on my friends for inspiration.
Is there an item you’re currently obsessing over?
Rachel: I need this Rachel Roy dress in my life, but not until it goes on super sale. Crossing my fingers.
Rebekah: Everything that I can’t afford. But currently I am on the hunt for a new everyday bag, I’m keeping an eye out for my favorite designers on Gilt and trying to get a good deal.
What was your most recent acquisition?
Rachel: I just ordered a Rachel Pally printed maxi from Gilt last week that hasn’t come in the mail yet, but I’m pretty excited!
What is one item in your closet that you can’t live without?
Rachel: Honestly, my jean jacket is my go-to, I’m pretty sure my sister will say the same. I love that I can throw it over any dress in any season.
Rebekah: My Levi’s jean jacket, I wear it much too often.
What’s in your closet that you’ve never worn?
Rachel: Hmm, this actually has never really been a problem for me. I have a couple pairs of ridiculously high shoes that have only been worn like once.
Rebekah: Most everything in my closet gets worn at least once. Some things just never get worn again.
Flats or heels?
Rachel: Flats, I’m 6 feet tall. I do love heels but I’m 6′ 4″ when I wear them and that’s a little bit ridiculous for the everyday. On special occasions I break out the heels and own it. Bekah and my shoe collection is smaller than the average girl, mostly because we have size 11 feet and the cute stuff never comes in our size!
Rebekah: Flats 95% of the time. I’m too tall to live in heels (although, I wish I could). I do enjoy wearing them on a night out.
Lipstick or nude?
Rachel: Nude, I’ve never been one for lipstick, but once in a blue moon I’ll rock a red lip.
Rebekah: Nude. I tend to wear a dark smokey eye for the most part, but i do enjoy playing with dark fun lip colors from time to time. MAC’s “Diva” lipstick is one of my favorites.
How often do you purge items from your closet, and where do your castaways go?
Rachel: Very rarely, usually whenever I’m moving, which lately has been about once a year.
Rebekah: I purged a bit before we moved to our current place, but aside from that, almost never.
What is one trend you can’t stand?
Rachel: I hate heel-less shoes, I think they are the least flattering shoe you could possibly wear. They look like Clydesdale hooves.
Rebekah: I hope this doesn’t score me too many enemies, but I really don’t like those Jeffery Campbell “Lita” booties that are so in right now. Am I the only one?
What are your favorite styling products?
Rachel: I’m pretty low maintenance. I use MAC makeup; fluidline in “blacktrack” and powder blush in “melba” are two things I can’t go without. A year ago you would have seen only Pantene in my shower, but my boyfriend’s family owns Deeda Salon, so I have since upgraded to Bumble and Bumble hair products.
Rebekah: MAC’s eyeliner in “blacktrack” I hate to say it, but I won’t leave the house without it, and MAC’s powder blush in “melba.” Also: Aveda’s Air Control hairspray, it does a great job holding my fine hair in place without weighing it down.
If I looked in your purse, what would I find?
Rachel: A few pairs of turquoise earrings, chapstick and some tweezers. Nothing too exciting.
Rebekah: Chapstick, receipts, a pen—my purse is really boring. There tends to be a lot of paper clips and binder clips in my purse as well.
Favorite shopping spots?
Rachel: Pretty much my entire wardrobe is from Heart Clothing Boutique, Nordstrom Rack, Gilt, and what I consider my semi-secret, the Impulse sale racks at the Macy’s in the downtown plaza. Nobody seems to know how much good loot there is at that one. I get so many amazing things there. Oh, and we cant forget Target.
Rebekah: Heart Clothing Boutique and Cuffs are my favorite boutiques here in Sac, but Nordstrom Rack, Macy’s Impulse section and, of course, Target are among my go-tos. I also frequent Gilt. I always look for sales and rarely pay full price, it’s a must on a student’s budget.
Give me 5 of your favorite local haunts.
Rachel: Heart is my favorite local boutique. We love to eat at Ella, drink at Simon’s or Morgan’s anytime there’s a game on. We just moved to East Sac, so were planning to spend more time at our old favorites, Hilltop Tavern and Bonn Lair.
Rebekah: Ella is my favorite happy hour spot. Simon’s seems to be the last stop for every night out. Deeda Salon. I get coffee almost every day at Il Fornaio. My office is too close to the downtown plaza, so I spend too much time at Macy’s.
