Closet Case :: Morgan Shotwell

Morgan Shotwell is one tough lady. I’ve only met her twice, but it’s obvious that she can hold her own despite her petite frame. Standing at a mere 5’3″ (or 5’4″, depending on the day you ask her), this pretty lady favors a bohemian style with a hard edge. She kind of reminds me of Kate Moss…petite and pretty with something slightly sinister and mysterious bubbling just below the surface.

Residing in Midtown with her faithful corgi Ingrid and her black cat Shadow-Fang, Morgan admittedly spends her days “hustlin’.”

“All day long I be hustlin’—paintings, vintage clothes, etc.” remarked the 26-year-old artist and musician. Morgan recently painted a large mural on the Eleakis and Elder Photography studio building and has plans to start a new online shop and clothing line with the help of fellow Sacramentan and artist Mary Katherine Cobb. The line will consist of reconstructed vintage and handmade couture pieces, and will likely pop up on eBay or Etsy in the near future.

When asked about her dream job, Morgan was quick to respond, “To be able to travel and make art and music enough to sustain the travelling costs. Hopefully, get a meal here and there, I guess. Wouldn’t that be nice? Ha!”

Wherever life takes her, you can bet that there will never be a dull moment. People with as much wit, spunk and tenacity as Morgan always keep themselves (and those around them) on their toes! Every day looks completely different from the day before and every outfit is just as kooky and youthful as you’d expect from such a free spirit.

How would you describe your style?
Hmm. Kurt Cobain joins the circus in the ’70s. Really though, I dress up however I’m feeling day to day. I have so much shit, I can be who ever I want to be.

Who are your favorite designers?
Westwood, Chanel, McQueen—to keep it simple, but my real list would be endless.

If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?
Wait, do I get their figure as well? Haha. I really don’t know.

Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I’m a fan of Nylon mag and Vogue, although the last issue I put down. I really don’t want shoulder pads to come back. I hate them. They’re awful.

Is there an item you’re currently eyeing?
I’m not checking out anything currently. I try not to get too attached. If I’m looking, it means I didn’t need to buy it. I would have already if it was meant to be.

What was your most recent wardrobe purchase?
I got this rad maxi summer party dress at the Sacramento Antique Fair for 3 bucks. I love it.

What is one item in your closet can’t you live without?
Jet-black nylons.

What’s in your closet that you’ve never worn?
All sorts of things.

How often do you purge items from your closet, and where do your castaways go?
Purging is getting easier for me. For a while I had a hard time discarding things. Now I just go drop shit off at the donation center and walk next door to shop. Goodwill. That is what’s up.

What are your favorite styling products?
I don’t “do” my hair. I haven’t blown it dry in three years, at least. I hardly brush my hair at all, to be honest. I swear by my Bumble and Bumble concoction: Tonic Lotion, Surf Spray, and Curl Conscious Defining Cream for fine curls. I kinda mush it up in my hands and ta-da!

I also love all Chanel all the way. Especially, their Rouge Allure lipstick in “La Fascinante.” I’m also digging these new felt-tip eyeliner pens by Almay. They’re super accurate.

Have any shopping spots you’re willing to divulge?
I say hit the estate sales. That’s where it’s at.

What music do you listen to when you’re getting ready to go out?
I like the hip-hop. Also, LCD Soundsystem’s 45:33 Remixes.
