Meet the adorable Elizabeth Gonsalves. A happy, enthusiastic and passionate beauty with a girl-next-door charm and an underlying edge. I first met the 24-year-old beauty while I was shooting her cousin, style maven Mary Gonsalves Kinney, as she prepped for her annual Fashion Night Out event. You see, in addition to being related to Mary, Elizabeth also works as a styling assistant and blogger for Sister | Brother Style and Style Army (both founded by her stylish cousin). Apparently, a passion for fashion runs in the family!
When she’s not helping out her cousin, Elizabeth can be found maintaining her own blog, Everything’s a Thing, which focuses on three Fs: fashion, fitness and food. She also likes to spend time cuddling with the newest addition to her family, Zoe, a three-month-old ball of pure kitten joy…which I totally tried to cat nap!
During our shoot, Elizabeth rocked quite a few trends seen on the catwalks in 2012—including a luxe sweatshirt, statement jewelry and a leather, peplum shirt—proof the fashionable lady knows how to take trends from runway to reality. Read on for more about Elizabeth and her style ethos.
How would you describe your style?
My style is constantly evolving, but it’s pretty eclectic. I dress how I feel, so one day I may be in a baby doll dress with pearls and a top bun, the next a leather skirt with a crop top and red lip, just depends on my mood. For the most part I stick with pretty simple feminine basics and throw in trendy elements to give that edge that I look for.
Who are your favorite designers?
Too many to mention, but I adore Diane Von Furstenberg, Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Helmut Lang, Isabel Marant, Maison Martin Margiela, Jason Wu. I also love Dannijo and Pamela Love for jewelry, so fantastic.
If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose would it be?
Alexa Chung, I mean c’mon, who else? Alexa has it all. On top of being gorgeous and charming, her style is constantly evolving while remaining unmistakably hers. Who wouldn’t want that?
Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
Pretty much all over the place. I’m always checking out what people are wearing when I‘m out, what kind of prints their matching, the layering, and so on. I also stay up on magazines and blogs for inspiration. My fave magazines are Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Elle. Sites like the Sartorialist, Man Repeller, Mr. Newton, Face Hunter, the Glamourai, and so many others are also great sources.
Is there an item you’re currently eyeing?
Since the beginning of fall I’ve been committed to finding a sequined winter piece. At first it was a quest for the perfect sequined dress for a holiday party, but I’ve recently spotted a sequined cropped pant that stopped me dead in my tracks, so I may go that route.
What was your most recent wardrobe purchase?
I recently bought a pair of Sam Edelman rain boots that are army green and super adorable. They get me in the mood to pile on the layers and splash in puddles.
Do you have a favorite item in your closet?
I really love my simple turtleneck sweaters, especially the black ones. There is something so classic and understated about a turtleneck, and I always feel like Audrey Hepburn when I wear one.
What is one item in your closet that you can’t live without?
My black pencil skirt. Pencil skirts are a closet staple and they can be styled a million different ways, always a great thing.
What’s in your closet that you’ve never worn?
More than I would really like to admit to. I love clothes. Everything gets worn, eventually.
How often do you purge items from your closet, and where do your castaways go?
At the beginning and end of each season, usually. I try to be honest with myself about where I’m at style wise, and assess what will never come back into style, but sometimes it’s hard to get rid of some things. My castaways usually go to friends or the Goodwill.
Style-wise, is there a current trend you can’t stand?
Kitten heels. I love the idea of them, and some ladies look fab in them, but since I’m already pretty short, it isn’t the best option for me. Also they tend to look a bit clunky which visually throws me off.
What are your favorite styling products?
I’ve worn Bare Minerals face makeup for years and I love how light it is, plus it has SPF built in which is nice. For nails I love OPI and Butter London.
Give me your 5 favorite local haunts.
I love Old Soul (on L Street) for a cup of coffee and to do some writing. Paesanos for a bite, Shady Lady for a drink, Pour House for meeting friends and great music and, of course, the Capital for a run and to relax.
